Well, I was going to make a Spice Up Your Life reference, but Rada Tea beat me to it! Maybe I’ll go Evanescence… “Spice me up (spice me up inside)”… (Look alright, the good one was taken).

If you’d like to read a little more background on Rada Tea, I’ve included some information on who they are and what they bring to the tea world in my previous review of their Mindfulness blend.

Spice Me Up! Is a … spiced tisane, which you probably didn’t need me to tell you. As the nights in the northern hemisphere draw in, and the days are getting very cold, spice is needed, and fantastically, Rada have just expanded their delivery area to include Europe as well as the UK, so even more people can be warmed by this lovely brew.

So snuggle up under a blanket, and let’s get on with the review.

Spice Me Up! contains a lot of the classic tastes you’d expect from a spiced infusion – ginger, cinnamon, clove and cardamom – along with rosehip, apple and elderberry, which lends the loose blend a fruity aroma as well as spicy.

The brewing time, admittedly, is the longest I’ve seen on a tea (25-30 minutes), but then again, we are dealing with whole spices and no added flavouring here – you could possibly cut corners by simmering rather than steeping, as you would with a stovetop chai (which would simmer for around 10 minutes with whole spices in), but you’d possibly spoil the fruit? I don’t know, I’m not a fruit scientist.

Once brewed, the liquor is a light gold colour, and the inhale is cloves and fruity richness. The apple and elderberries hit the tongue with a sweetness that is almost creamy, leaving the spices on the back of the palate, warming but not overwhelming.

This is a naturally sweet tea, I’ve had several cups now and I’ve not felt the need to add anything to it at all, despite my cupboard full of honey and nectars. The spice level is good and present but not overwhelming, I think this is a tea the whole family could enjoy, even younger teaple (I think they call them children?), especially on a cold winter evening.
